“… I went to D.C. for the first live, in-person Fire Drill Fridays rally. Thank heavens for that because it was a busy week. Besides the rally, I did some lobbying and spoke twice at the Democracy Alliance all in an effort to stop Senator Joe Manchin’s side deal which climate activists call the Dirty Deal. This deal, called ‘permitting reform,’ seeks to fast track fossil fuel projects, does great harm to bedrock environmental protections and curtails the public‘s ability to have input, basically throwing marginalized communities disproportionately burdened by fossil fuel pollution under the bus.”
Fonda retakes the Hill: ‘Cancer is scary, but the climate crisis is scarier’
In-person Fire Drill Fridays were put on hold during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and delayed further when Jane Fonda was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma this summer. She has mostly sailed through her chemotherapy treatments, although she admits the last one was hard. “It took a couple of weeks to recover,” she says. But she literally laughs off a disease that she insists won’t stop her from doing what she cares about most. “Cancer is scary, but the climate crisis is scarier,” she says flatly.

Jane Fonda said with a Democratic president in office and a majority in the Senate, like-minded supporters must “demand” that President Biden declare a climate emergency. “When he does that, all kinds of mechanisms become available to him, including Pentagon money that you can use for green technology going forward, including banning export of U.S. crude oil, for example, which would be very important, and stopping fossil fuel subsidies that taxpayers pay $20 billion every year for this stuff that’s killing us.”

Louis Virtel asked Fonda about her Fire Drill Fridays, a weekly rally on Capitol Hill that she instituted in 2019 with Greenpeace USA, where participants engage in civil disobedience to protest the government’s climate inaction. “I figured this little old lady from Hollywood shows up and gets arrested every week,” she said, “that’s going to get people noticing.”
